Why GJM is resorting to violence in Hills?
As I have pointed out in earlier submission, Gorkhaland is a distinct impossibility. Not that I have any personal objection to a new state, but a new statehood demand must be backed by sufficient area, a big population compared to overall population of India and sufficient financial viability to sustain a state. Not that there are no smaller states in India like pondicherry or Goa, but those states have a pre-independence history of India and were existing states when India became independent.
Now if Gorkhaland statehood is given, there will be 500 to 1000 statehood demands coming from small ethnic populations from various parts of India. This will obviously fragment India and dilute the work done by our Great visionery Sardar Ballav Bhai Patel who integrated 600 small Indian independent states to the Great Indian Union that we are today.
Further violence, as resorted to by GJM, will be unproductive or even counter productive as, if a state is conceded under the fear of violence, more such incidents will be on cards to press for more statehood demands.
Indian people in general do not recognize Gorkha as a separate entity either (I fully recognize the services of Gorkhas in Indian military and their patriotism is beyond any question). They are considered as a part of Nepali speaking Indians and Nepali language is already included in the eighth schedule of Indian Constitution. Nepali speaking people ( be them Gorkhas, Lepchas, Bhutias) have not only a state of their own in Nepali speaking 'Sikkim', but also have a international nation 'Nepal' which is accessible to Indians as a whole without entry Visas or Passports. It is like the Bengalis having their own state of West Bengal and Tripura apart from an International state of Bangladesh. After many fruitful discussions, the GTA has come into being and negating a treaty, every now and then, can only create serious problems rather than solving any of it, as is happening now
It will therefore be prudent for political leadership of hills to ponder seriously over things logically and taking into considerations the pan India implications of a miniature Gorkhaland state.
